In La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc, Carl Dreyer directed one of the great performances of the cinema and in the process created one of its greatest icons. Maria (Renée) Falconetti is remarkable. On stage from the age of eighteen, she starred in her only film, at the age of thirty-five, playing a nineteen year old virgin.. La passion de Jeanne d'Arc is my least favourite, but I will emphasise that as I think the other four are among the most wonderful films ever made, this is not a dismissal. Shot by shot, or short sequence by short sequence, I think La passion de Jeanne d'Arc is an astonishing film, yet, at least after two viewings, I don't find the whole.
